Next-Generation Concussion Prevention Technology

HiveGuard

Smart Protection. Safe Minds. Confident Play.

Our Product

HiveGuard - a helmet that protects not just the skull, but the mind

Our Story

HiveGuard began with my older brother Qiushi, a AAA hockey player in the GTHL. Hockey was his whole world, but he experienced multiple concussions that eventually ended his 13 year hockey career. Watching my brother struggle with the aftermath of these injuries, I realized that current helmet technology wasn't doing enough to protect athletes from brain injuries.

Determined to make a difference, I assembled a team of fellow students with technical expertise who shared my vision: to create a smarter, safer helmet that could both prevent concussions and detect early warning signs of brain injury. We have been iterating for the past three years and developed HiveGuard's signature honeycomb structure, which provides superior impact absorption compared to traditional foam padding.

But protection wasn't enough. We integrated advanced EEG sensors and AI-powered analysis to continuously monitor brain activity, creating a system that establishes individual baselines and detects anomalies in real-time. This innovation gives coaches, parents, and medical professionals objective data to make informed decisions about player safety.

Our goal is to build a future where athletes never trade long-term health for the sport they love. HiveGuard delivers safer impacts and real-time brain data to every level of play. What began with one injury is now a mission to protect every athlete's future.

How HiveGuard Works

HiveGuard has two main goals:

  • Reducing concussion risk by improving impact absorption.
  • Warning players by detecting deviations from an individual's cognitive baseline that may reflect changes in neural readiness and recovery.
1

Honeycomb Impact Absorption

Honeycomb structure

Our bio-inspired honeycomb lattice distributes impact forces more effectively than traditional foam, reducing peak accelerations.

2

EEG Sensor System

EEG sensor system

Integrated EEG sensors continuously monitor brain activity, establishing individual baselines and detecting anomalies in real-time.

3

AI-Powered Analysis

AI model architecture

Our deep-learning model, EEGConvTrans, detects immediate neural shifts and longer-range patterns linked to elevated concussion risk. The model outputs a probability of altered neural adaptability, providing objective data to support sideline protocols and decision-making. The signal is designed to flag elevated risk, not to diagnose a concussion.

Coach Chris Malkhassian with championship trophyCoach Chris Malkhassian

Coach Malkhassian highlights the critical challenge coaches face: making real-time decisions about head injuries without medical professionals on the bench. The hardest part isn't knowing the protocols—it's balancing caution with certainty under pressure.

"If you remove a player for suspected concussion, that player is automatically locked into a multi-day protocol, even if they turn out to be completely fine. So coaches are constantly balancing two real risks: being overly cautious and unnecessarily sidelining a healthy player, or assuming everything is fine when you're wrong."

On helmets and safety equipment, Coach Malkhassian emphasizes that parents will invest in safety when trust is earned through clear certification, third-party validation, league acceptance, and real data. The biggest opportunity isn't just comfort—it's helping reduce uncertainty and supporting better, faster, more confident decisions for coaches and parents in critical moments.
